21st century sporting venues- Eco- stadium!
Congratulations to the New York Giants on their Super Bowl win. Eli Manning is a top- tier quarterback now!
I want to stick with the football theme with today’s blog.
Now there have been a few brand new stadiums popping up in the States. Dallas got their $1.33 billion gargantuan stadium, complete with a HUGE screen that gets in the way of skyward punts. Indianapolis has their new stadium, seating 67, 000 fans and hosting Super Bowl XLVI. Minnisota is trying their best to find the Vikings a new home after the roof collapsed a couple years ago. Now, San Francisco, its your turn.
During a Monday Night Football game versus the Steelers, a small electrical explosion happened outside of Candlestick Park, blackening the whole stadium. No one was hurt, but for the 49ers brass and its fans, it was a bit of a blow to the ego. Candlestick is ancient by comparison to some NFL stadiums. Being built in 1960 for the cost of $15 million, it is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. Enter Santa Clara.
Plans for a new stadium located just outside of San Francisco in Santa Clara have been pushed for a few years now. While football, concerts and fan enjoyment is obviously on the minds of developers, they wanted to take a step outside out the box. They wanted something that was economically and environmentally sustainable. Green space, recycling, reusing and reduction of overall costs of running the multi- purpose venue. Now for the cool part…
Developers worked hard with the EPA and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) to come up with a green plan. The stadium will include photovoltaic panels (the process of generating power by converting solar radiation by using semi conductors). A green roof will be placed on top of the buildings. This purpose is for natural cooling. Also, the rain will be collected and used for the high- efficient bathroom fixtures. Public transit will be enhanced as will bike and walking paths to the stadium. The list goes on and on, but this is a formidable start to something that can change the way we enjoy sporting events. Not only will the design of the stadium allow more light and fresh air in, but there will be much more room. The stadium at Santa Clara will have almost a million more square feet than Candlestick and 44 more feet on the concourse. Now, the NFL has ante’d up and allowed $200 million on loan to help with the construction.
This stadium, in my opinion, will set a huge standard for upcoming stadiums being built. With the environment in the minds of many, this building will set the bar high in sustainability and fan enjoyment. I cannot wait to see this building be constructed and watch some high quality football be played in this amazing feat of engineering. Construction is set to be finished by 2015.
